The "sermon on the mount" is a masterful description of what it means to be alive to God. The original hearers of this discourse were "astonished". Are we also astonished ? We should be. Everyone will eventually be very, very astonished at that content of this sermon; some in this life, all the rest in the age to come. The crowds were astonished because of the "authority" with which Jesus spoke. He speech was much different than "their scribes." The crowds were astonished at his teaching concerning himself. Who did Jesus really claim to be? The crowds were astonished and we should be astonished--at his teaching concerning membership in the kingdom of heaven: what we call assurance of salvation. matthew 5:3 and matthew 5:10 function as aliterary device called an inclusion: beginning and ending with the same statement. In other words Matthew 5:3-5:10 describe the character of those who possess the kingdom of heaven. If the "beattitudes do not describe you in at least seed form you are not a Christian, you are not a "new creature in Christ". Jesus told Nicodemus that unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of heaven. The flip side is that if you are born again you can see the kingdom of heaven and Matthew 5:3-5:12 is what it looks like. You can now perhaps see why so many people were then and will in the future be astonished!
