Hebrews 11:29 commends the faith of Israel as the people stepped into the Red Sea and crossed over on dry land to freedom. They passed through … by faith. But to be brutally honest, that was one of the few and final acts of faith for the first generation of Israel! After that they seemed to specialize in grumbling, rebellion, and fear. Finally, God banished them into the wilderness outside the Promised Land until all of "Israel Gen 1" died.
Fast-forward 40 years… The second generation of Israel comes of age.Moses gathers them together and reminds them of their history and destiny, then…he dies. Israel's new leader is Joshua – Moses' familiar right-hand man. It's finally time for Israel to enter, conquer, and occupy Canaan. Join me back in Hebrews 11 – The Faith Hall of Fame – as we read vv.30-31. These two "by faith" verses take us around Jericho and into Jericho! We find faith outside of Jericho in Israel's armies. And then faith inside of Jericho in the heart of a Canaanite harlot! Where did that come from…!?! In God's Word we'll see that the fall of Jericho revealed two examples of faith, one outside the city walls and one inside: i.) the faith of Israel's army as Jericho fell (v.30); ii.) the unexpected faith of a harlot as Rahab repented (v.31).
