In the flow of the book of Revelation two interludes interrupt the series of seven seal judgments. The first interlude describes the sealing, or protection, of 144,000 Jewish believers who will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the entire period of judgment on the earth (Revelation 7:1-8). The second interlude, closely associated with the first, describes the salvation of a great multitude of people (Revelation 7:9-17). The proximity of these two interludes hints at a cause and effect relationship. Because many Jews will put their faith in Jesus and become outspoken messengers of the gospel, countless others—both Jews and Gentiles—will come to faith. However, becoming a believer in Jesus Christ in that future, intense time of judgment will carry a severe penalty. Many will die as martyrs, only to stand in the presence of God in heaven where they will render Him worship and receive from their Lord eternal peace and comfort. This second interlude provides a graphic reminder that even today we can worship God wholeheartedly and take comfort in His abiding presence. The facts of the future teach us to worship God and rest in His presence today and every day.
