This is not two neighbours talking over the fence – having a polite conversation. This term “conversation” refers to your whole manner of life. The Bible puts you under the microscope to look at your whole life from you arise in the morning till you lay your head on your pillow. There is no room for Sunday only Christians here.
In context and in the age in which it was written it applies to these Hebrew Christians, who were called to great change, to worship by great simplicity of life in comparison to Judaism with so much visible stuff.
They were being called to leave behind the temple, the silver and gold of their Levitical worship. The temple was their anchor and the Levitical worship was their identity. You can’t just ask people to give up – you must tell them what to life for and what to hold onto.
