I. The Privileges of Being God's People (vv. 7, 8, 33, 34). II. The Obligations of God's People. • ONE: To fear Him ("so that they may learnt to fear me all the days that they live on the earth" v. 10). God deliberately made them come to the mountain to hear him, the thunder, flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet with the mountain smoking (Ex. 20:18)! They need to experience the power of God and the His voice — they begged Moses to go and get the Word and for him to speak to them (Deut. 5:25-27). • TWO: [FIRST COMMANDMENT] To have no other gods but Him (vv. 32-40). Nothing can COMPETE with God: our affections must naturally go to Him, our allegiance and devotion must be upon Him — nothing should compete! • THREE: [SECOND COMMANDMENT] To not make any images or representations of Him. Twice Moses declares "you saw no form" (v. 15), "saw no form" (v. 12). They only heard a voice (v. 12)!!! Therefore no images at all. III. The Goodness and Greatness of the God of Israel (of the People). Look at vv. 25-31. He knows they will forsake Him (it will literally happen as he describes it in these verses). These verses reveal two things. Man's perversity (v. 28) and God's goodness. They will worship idols that cannot see, hear, eat or smell (v. 28) but they will seek him and will find him when they search for him with their whole heart and soul (v. 29). God will receive returning backslidden people. He will heal their waywardness and restore them to Himself!!! God is far more willing to forgive and receive us than we are to going to Him.
