"Cease listening to instruction... and you will stray from the words of knowledge" (Proverbs 19:27).
"A man who wanders from the way of understanding will be comfortable among the walking dead" (Proverbs 21:16).
Proverbs warns us of the dangers of "skipping" or "turning down the volume," as it applies to, "listening to God and His instructions for life." What's the warning? It's inevitable and unavoidable... once anyone loses interest and tunes out God's word, God's ways and God's irreplaceable wisdom they are going to "stray from the words of knowledge and depart from the way of understanding and be at peace and comfortable among those who lack any of God's wisdom and insight" (Proverbs 19:27 ; 21:16).
Think about it? When we turn one thing down, or tune something else out, it's because we're "looking" to turn something else up. We've lost interest in something that used to lift our spirit... but now we're searching for something else to do it.
Our moods — how we're feeling — will often be what dictates what we're turning up. And if we let them dictate how we listen to God's instructions and insight we're going to be one miserable and frustrating person to live among, work with and serve along side. We can't let our FEELINGS govern us or the volume on the truth we're listening to.
