This passage is especially well known because of the excuses that were made in response to invitations to a "great supper". In context "the great supper" represents all the blessings of the kingdom of God promised in the law and prophets up to the time of Christ. "And invited many" refers to all the divine calls to the Jews throughout their history up until the time of Christ. The maker of the great supper sent out his servant ( John the Baptist) and said, "come, all things are now ready"; or "the kingdom of God is at hand" (Matthew 3:2). But the actual turnout was quite small and He who made the great supper sent out for other less likely invitees--the Jewish sinners and publicans. Then since there was still much room--more even less likely invitees are called, namely, the Gentiles. Those who refuse to come to the great supper reveal at least three things: 1. A corrupt nature set in its ways. 2. A low opinion of the supper. 3. A low opinion of the one who prepared the supper. God is still calling, but time is running out: 14:21-24.
