Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the title I have given this sermon is "Propaganda Perishes." The psalm before us complains of the behavior of the wicked — not, indeed, in terms so extreme as Psalm 11, where the interlocutor frankly overstates the case, but in terms that fully reflect the depredations that the lies of the wicked wreak upon the righteous. The king identifies two problems — the propaganda problem and the persistence problem, or three if you want to categorize the existence of liars as a problem separate from the lies they tell so fervently and uninterruptedly. As with the alleged problems of foundation destruction and wickedness in power described in Ps 11, the solution to the propaganda problem and the persistence problem is fervent prayer and trust in the words of the LORD. The words of the Lord will endure, but the words of liars will fail. As Yahweh said to Jeremiah, "Those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs" (Jer 44:28 ESV). Well, Ps 12 reminds us that Yahweh's word will stand — and the wicked's word will not. God's pure word will prevail over the rotten words of human demagogues, flatterers, propagandists, pundits, politicians and liars, freeing us from the need to fear or imitate them.
