God is sovereign and government is His delegate in a limited sphere. Jesus tells us to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." There is a certain place for human government. Government has to do with outward things, but not the life of the soul of the individual. Government either wittingly or unwittingly serves God. Wicked rulers are permitted to ascend to punish and correct. John Calvin wrote, "When God wants to judge a nation, He gives them wicked rulers." We may not have the rulers that we want, but we have the rulers we deserve! And note, political preoccupation is not good. It makes news junkies and brings confirmation bias. It is a distraction from the most important thing. The eternal is more important than the temporal. "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:18) There will never be a political utopia. Government cannot save us. Our mission is not political but evangelical!
