Once again it is our privilege as the people of God to come to the Lord's Supper. This privilege is extended to the children of God alone, and it is our Lord's designated time to remember His sacrificial work, and to reflect upon its great significance in our lives. In this sermon I will address the issue raised in the title. The text is really quite simple, and it reveals what God did not do; what God did do; and the reason why God did what He did. I will open it up precisely in that manner. It is absolutely incredible to realize that God did not spare His only-begotten Son the suffering of this life and the horrors of death by crucifixion. But who can fathom the strange design whereby God did not spare Him from His own white-hot wrath? Rather, He gladly did give Him up for our sakes. Thus He did not spare His Son but He willingly spared us rebels! And why? So that He could graciously pour out His abundant blessing upon His people in time and eternity! Indeed, what manner of love was this? May the Lord be pleased to bless His word as we prepare our hearts to come to the Lord's Supper!
