1 Timothy 5 has many practical instructions for today. First we deal with the issue of how to rebuke someone in the church. We should do it gently, as loving family members would. Secondly, we look at the church benevolence ministry. Should the church take care of widows? Yes. All of them? No. Only the ones who don't have children or grandchildren to first fulfill their responsibility and also those who have proven to be of stellar character. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will all be bankrupt soon. We can no longer count on these means to take care of aging parents and grandparents. Frankly, we never should have. We are returning to the pattern that has existed for thousands of years. Family takes care of their elderly.
