How do we understand the promises of God? Some of the promises need little explanation. The promise of the Lord Jesus to send the Helper, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit is clear. The promise that Christ will never leave nor forsake the children of God, is plain. We know and can rest assured that our Triune God is a covenant making, covenant keeping, faithful God, whose promises are “Yes!” in Christ, and thus we say in Christ, “Amen!”. But questions may nonetheless be presented concerning various promises. And one of those questions may be: HOW? How will He fulfill this promise? How does this particular promise apply to me, to the church, today? These are good and important questions. These are not disrespectful, untrusting, questions. No . . . this is a question that recognizes the truth and eternal nature of the promises of God, and believes and knows that He has or will fulfill each and every one. Here in Proverbs 3, in the first twelve verses, the children of God are given many promises, and the question for us is how will He fulfill them to us individually and to His church?
