Last week, we saw that Jesus declared the permanence of the Old Testament. This week, He draws two conclusions from that permanence. First, Kingdom status depends on one’s attitude toward the law; second, one must keep the law better than the Scribes and Pharisees to gain entrance to the Kingdom. You must be better than the Scribes and Pharisees if you even want to meet the minimum threshold for Kingdom entrance. This is achieved by justification, a qualitatively better righteousness, and sanctification, a quantitatively better righteousness.
