This is a story of secular pride and divine faithfulness. It shows what humanity without God can become. It includes the weakness of God's people and demonstrates that God is faithful to his Word already given even when he is silent in our darkness. Here we see the motives of methods of secular man, and the misery they bring (there are no winners). It hints at the conflict between Satan the Destroyer and Jesus the Saviour. The story takes us back to David's failure to live up to his responsibilities as father and judge, and shows how dangerous it is to show favouritism. Principles appear: past guilt must not hinder present duty; we must put principles above feelings; personal interests must not come before serving Christ. Although God was silent in David's troubles his Word stood: both his promise and his warning. Indeed, the historian recognises God's Providence in the turn of events. His expressed purpose will stand fast for us also; meantime let us not give in to Satan's lie that his character has overcome the character of God.
