David had been promised a dynasty and one from his line will forever have possession of the throne, looking forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, Great David's Greater Son. Possessing so much from the Lord, David is able to go and secure some wonderful victories against the nation's enemies (2 Samuel 8 and 10). The Philistines are defeated in 2 Samuel 5:17-25 and then once more in 2 Samuel 8:1, and are not heard of again as a threat to the nation. Nations such as Moab, Ammon, and Syria are subdued and the methods used are, at times, seemingly quite brutal.
Today, our battles are not to be fought against literal enemies bearing weapons like swords. We have spiritual enemies and we are in a spiritual battle. We fight spiritual; foes such as sin, the world and the devil with spiritual weapons. The Lord's people are the church militant while upon the earth.
