The verse portrays three things Jesus is and three things Jesus has done for us. JESUS CHRIST: Christ is portrayed in this passage in a threefold manner: Prophet, Priest, and King. He is the faithful witness reflected in His earthly ministry, the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. This description also shows the threefold ministry of Christ. 1) He was a faithful witness. 2) He was raised from the dead to intercede for us at the right hand of the Father. 3) He is coming again one day to reign as King over the princes of the earth. Verse 5 begins by telling three things that the Son is. He IS 1) the faithful witness, 2) the first of the begotten of the dead, and 3) the prince of the kings of the earth. The passage continues by telling three things that Jesus did: • Jesus loved us • Jesus washed us from our sins in his own blood • Jesus made us kings and priests unto God ^^Prophet: Deuteronomy tells us that a prophet was to arise. Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Acts 3:19-24 tells us that the prophet will be Christ. Among other things, Christ qualified Himself for this office by His prophetic statements concerning the end times in Matthew chapter 24. He also made many statements concerning His death, burial, and resurrection to His disciples. ^^Priest: Christ is our High Priest in Heaven (Hebrews 3:1; 4:14).
