It seems you are assuming "physical death" and "spiritual death" are one and the same. What if Romans 5:12 speaks of spiritual death? That would imply that Adam was spiritually alive, yes, but more than that: It also allows that he could be spiritually dead and live perpetually in his fallen state had he access to the tree of life, correct?

“ Great Sermon! ”
Hi. Great conversation on a topic that really gets you thinking. I have a question, though. In one part of the conversation, it was brought up whether Adam was immortal when he was created. The general consensus seemed to be "no". My question is this...The bible is quite clear in Romans 5:12 that death was brought into the world through sin. Romans 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" How could Adam have not been immortal before the fall, or am I just missing something or misunderstanding? Thank you very much.

I visit their site re-thinking hell, and they did compile a nice list of verses that hell preachers use, i just think their interpretation is wrong. While much can be said, I wanna post 2 verses: And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name." (Revelation 14:11 ESV) and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:10, 14, 15 ESV) If words have any meaning, then it seems the devil will be tormented forever and ever in the lake of fire, so the lake is really a tormenting place. And it is also a place of torment for anyone who is not written in the book of life. The is a book called the gagging of God by D.A Carson, the last chapter has about 20 pages of rebuttal on this topic.

This teaching will influence so many people, and bring about many other doctrines that would lead to so many new cults. I can see many people embracing purgotory because of this. But more importantly it is unbiblical and not true.

All of this discussion lends itself to fearing God. Mainly because we really can't know entirely the mind and motivation of a holy God. All the more reason to seek his love. Deep and worthwhile discussion.
