III. The Prophet Sent 7-9 God had at least three Redemptive purposes.
1. God was going to defeat Baal right in Baal’s own territory. 2. A long term redemptive purpose – Luke 4:24-28 3. Elijah’s going to Zarepheth was a judgment on Israel
IV. The Prophet, the Widow and her Son Sustained 10-16
V. God’s Surprising Providence 17-24
Final Applications:
1. The fact that Elijah, as a man of God – a prophet – and the very voice of God to Israel moved from the secluded brook Cherith to Zeraphath shows that God not only sustains His Word, He actively uses it to accomplish His purposes.
2. The widow’s ready acceptance of Elijah’s command to bring him her last bit of food showed her willingness to give God everything she had.
3. The raising of the widow’s son would have been a great encouragement to Elijah strengthening him for the great task of taking on the 450 prophets of Baal.
4. The raising of the widow’s son encourages believers in every age that God alone is the Lord of life and death. Our lives are in His hand, and we can rest assured that we are immortal until our work on earth is done.
