The apostolic authority of the apostle Paul was called into question. In particular, was the issue of what is the content of the message of the gospel. Paul was proclaiming the gospel he had received by means of direct revelation from God. He had not heard it nor learned it from anyone else, including the other apostles. The one message from God providing salvation for all people was pure and unmixed with any works of man, any additional requirements other than to simply respond in faith. Confronting the compromise being promoted in the early days of the church was vital for the ongoing ministry of the apostles and all believers down through our day. To add anything or take anything away from, or out of the gospel, is to negate its power and in effect be proclaiming another gospel and another Jesus that does not save.
