As Belshazzar is still in shock, and the Medes and Persians are still in siege of Babylon, Daniel is brought into the feast to read and interpret the handwriting on the wall. Although Belshazzar belittles Daniel and claims ignorance, Daniel respectfully passes on God's message to the king. He gives Belshazzar a history lesson about his grandfather and then proceeds to exhort the king about his own sins. His unrepentance is driven by pride, disrespect, sacrilege, blasphemy and idolatry. God's message: your kingdom is over, you have come up short and your kingdom will be given to the Medes and Persians. That night Darius the Mede took the kingdom and executed Belshazzar.
