Such is the anticipation and expectation of the self-absorbed. When they look at the cross they do not see a God who poured Himself out for rebellious and wicked individuals. The don’t think they have free access to the Father. They don’t believe in unconditional love. They don’t know complete and total forgiveness. Rather, they see the beginning of a salvation that they have to perfect in order for God to love them.
And so because they do not know grace, they ever and always are mindful of their own short-comings. Accordingly, God resembles a task master — ever looking for that moment when we mess up.
