In this passage, we will address Paul's credentials as an apostle, Paul's customary greeting (Grace, mercy and peace), Paul's great love for Timothy, Paul's example of prayer, the nature of a clear conscience, and finally the blessing of having saving faith granted to a family through the generations.
We address the hopefulness we should have with respect to raising children in the faith and instructing them in the Word, without falling into presumptuousness and assuming our children are saved or will be, just because their "ours." We consider the importance of avoiding certain pitfalls: 1. A lazy approach to spiritual instruction (Sunday is enough). 2. A failure to apply the rod of discipline. 3. Attending a lousy church, where the Word is not taken seriously. 4. Acting the part of the hypocrite to our children, showing them that no matter what we say, our actions betray that we don't believe the Word. 5. Teaching our children that they are saved until proven otherwise, just because they are ours, or because we are godly, or because of covenant theology or privilege. 6 Picking the fruit before it's ripe -- trying to rescue our children from spiritual distress by assuring them they are saved before the struggle is finished and God gives them peace, not us.
