SERMON INFO
I have a bone to pick with young, socially conservative Americans, and I know it’s something that will get under your skin. Just sit tight, though, and hear me out, because the elephant in our tidy little room is starting to tear things up. It’s time we acknowledge his existence, and maybe even call in some animal movers to take him back to the zoo.
I currently live in a small community in the Bible-belt of the country and I have been given some opportunities to mentor young people from my area through different venues. I can count on one hand the kids I know from the local high school whose parents have never been divorced. I’ve witnessed reactions of genuine surprise and envy from students who hear that my parents are still together. In any given conversation with groups of youth, I can expect to hear continual references to step-parents, step-siblings, and half-siblings. Divorce is a way of life down here – albeit one that has taken its toll in the lives of the young people that will make up the next generation.
However, while I could certainly write extensively on my experience with the negative effects of divorce on children and on society at large, I actually want to address something else entirely. I have concerns about the number one way that our culture chooses to perpetuate the cancer of broken marriages and failed relationships– underage dating.

“ Great Sermon! ”
I saw this article online earlier last week and especially appreciated the perspective of dating being a training ground for divorce. Great commentary. I totally agree that this is a parent issue at the core, not the responsibility of the church or the christian school, etc. However, the time youth spend under the mentoring of influential adults in school/church settings can't be ignored. The priorities, viewpoints, encouragements, etc, from these other adults all matter more than a little. And though NO adult has led a perfect life to pattern in front of these youth, the way they share their experiences of imperfection (in positive light vs negative) is very readily absorbed. We should be very careful not to glory in sharing our sin through testimony! They 'hear' one things but 'see' or 'know' another based on what we share with excitement, etc. Young people being married while in college is a great idea! Babies often would come along but if priorities are leading them to consider college of the most importance for both, they certainly can prioritize following ways of abstaining at appropriate times so as to prevent those baby blessings until they feel they are 'ready' for them. (Of course, we all know 'ready' is never an actuality. 'Willing' to re-prioritize a better choi

Thank you very healthy on the subject

“ Great Sermon! ”
Good idea to marry young. However, when a Christian couple ties the knot at the beginning of college, who will care for their 2-3 children born during those 4-5 years? Perhaps grandma can move in with them to help. Christians must certainly think far more creatively and strategically than we have.

“ AMEN!!! ”
This is sooooo true!!! I wish there were some way to broadcast this information to the masses. At least SOME loving parents (and smart kids) would be emboldened to change the status quo. There are many homeschool families succesfully putting these ideas into practice. The beauty is in hearing their married kids give testimony to how thankful they are for the purity these practices kept in place, and the LACK of heartache they experienced overall. Not only that, but putting into practice what was discussed at the end would be very liberating! (Isn't that the way things were years ago when college began to be such a big expectation here?) Excellent Points!
