I. Wrongly Desperate: Our nation teems with them like dandelions in the meadow. God forbid that we make light of the desperation people are in. Everyday in America about 80 persons take their lives. Suicide is usually wrong desperation. The nobleman in John 4: 43-54 was desperate, wrongly so--yet we are not to scoff at him or mock him. II. Rightly Instructed: His meeting with Jesus was jolting. His understanding of Jesus was second or third hand. His views of Jesus are frankly shoddy--as are the views of most of your neighbors. It never came to the nobleman's mind that Jesus can do anything for his little son at the point of death unless he stands like a doctor by the boy's bedside. Thus he compels Jesus, "come down (to Capernaum) ". III. Crowning Obedience: He is sent home without a sign, without a wonder, without Jesus' physical presence. He goes with a bare promise. He goes in faith with a bare promise. You are to go and do likewise. This man's faith was stunningly rewarded. Yours will as well. Leave the timing to God.
