I want to encourage us to find comfort from this Psalm as well how not to abuse or misuse it. Some of the most harmful things we can do to our faith is to misapply various passages. The devil did it from this very Psalm — it is the only time the devil ever explicitly cited Scripture. Rightly applied, this is a wonderful source of comfort. About The Text I want to go through this Psalm. But I need to raise a hermeneutical or interpretive issue before we do. We are not Israel and we are not under the Old Covenant. Though all the moral laws apply to us (since they haven't changed), the blessings of the Old Covenant were in material terms, with a physical land, with earthly blessings. Now mind you, they were types, signs of the spiritual blessings, how God would indeed give them everything they need — ultimately, an eternal relationship with Him.
In the NC, we are told tribulation and persecutions will arise on account of the Word (Mt. 13:21) and Jesus told us explicitly that in this world we will have tribulation (Jn. 16:33). Paul reminds the disciples that "through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22). We are to patient in tribulation (Rom. 12:12). Jesus tells the church in Smyrna, "I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich)" (Rev. 2:9) — well, they are poor, they are suffering but Jesus says they are rich???? ERGO: How does this relate to the Coronavirus? I. This Psalm teaches us that we are perfectly safe as we trust in our heavenly Father. II. This Psalm teaches us God will keep us from our biggest evil enemy, the devil. III. Have you held fast to Him in love? Do you know Him? Do you call Him?
