So many people came to Jesus, from so many towns and villages, that there were times when He appeared to be in danger of being crushed, and times when He and His disciples could not even eat. When Jesus' mother and half-brothers heard of this, they thought, "He's out of His mind," or "beside Himself." They determined to go to Him, apparently with the intention of bringing Him back to Nazareth for some rest. Remember that at this point, Jesus' brothers (he had at least 4, according to Mark 6), did not believe in Him (John 7), and it seems that even Mary's faith may have been shaken. As they were on their way to Him, scribes came from Jerusalem declaring that Jesus cast out demons because He was in league with Satan. The scribes said He was evil; His family said He was mad. He was neither. Knowing their purpose in coming to Him, He did not even leave the house where He was ministering when He heard His mother and brothers were outside. And He rebuked the scribes for their blasphemous allegation, and warned them that they were in danger of committing a sin that would never be pardoned by God. If you are Christ's disciple, the time may come when even your family members may conclude you are out of your mind. In the case of some of you, of course (without naming any names)they will be right. But others will be enduring persecution for the Lord's sake. This message covers these incidents, as well as the calling of the twelve.
