Jesus and His disciples were walking thru a field of grain when the disciples, who were hungry, took some of the grain to eat (as God's law permitted). But the scribes accused them of violating the Sabbath. That was quite a "Sabbath Stretch." In the next incident recorded, Jesus is accused of violating the Sabbath by simply speaking to an afflicted man in the synagogue, and telling him to stretch out his withered hand. Jesus healed him that moment, and he was enabled to obey, which he could not have done without such healing. The Scribes and Pharisees were angry with Jesus (again for "violating the Sabbath"). Jesus was angry with them more for caring more about their rituals and ceremonies and the comments on the law from other scribes, than they did for this poor afflicted man. Imagining that Jesus broke the law of God by simply speaking to this man, (not touching, not manipulating his withered hand)was truly a "Sabbath Stretch." Then the religious leaders, on that basis, determined to join forces with their natural enemies, the supporters of the family of King Herod, to try to destroy Jesus. They were prepared to clearly break the 6th commandment because they assumed (wrongly) that Jesus had broken the 4th commandment. What an example of the depravity of the human heart!
