The content of praise is the statement in verse 8. It focuses on attributes of God. Later they also praise Him for His works of creation and redemption. And the goal/outcome of this praise was that they gave God glory, honor, and thanks. Giving God glory means making much of His attributes so that He is more glorious in the eyes of others and of us. So we need theological depth in songs (Col.3:16), but also short, exclamatory, celebrative songs to express the joy that comes from the theology.
