Paul's sermon captured the hearts of many of his hearers. Their enthusiasm for his message was evident in their desire to hear more as well as in their following after the apostles when they left the synagogue. But the greatest indication of the effect of Paul's words was the impact these men had on their own community. Within the span of only one week they had propagated this new teaching with such passion and power that nearly the whole city came out to hear Paul speak on the following Sabbath. The gospel was bearing much fruit in Pisidian Antioch, but also much opposition. Jewish unbelief and opposition were nothing new to Paul; he had experienced them many times before. However, the situation at Antioch caused him to see for the first time the centrality of his calling to the Gentiles. He would continue to preach Christ to his countrymen, but henceforth he would turn his attention toward the Gentiles with a new sense of vision and heightened zeal. As a true son of Abraham, he was committed to fulfilling his own calling to mediate God's blessing to the ends of the earth.
