The previous sermon considered the content of Paul's gospel message to the synagogue gathering in Antioch; the present one examines his exhortation to his hearers in light of it. Being a Jew himself, Paul understood that the men assembled before him had a messianic hope. They recognized that the Scriptures promised to them a triumphal, regal Messiah; but like Paul in his prior unbelief, they misconstrued the nature of Messiah's conquest and kingdom and how those things related to them. They sought the revival of the glory of David's earthly kingdom, not the inauguration of the kingdom of the new creation. Most importantly, they were looking for a Messsiah who would vindicate their righteousness, not secure it for them. Without a radical reorientation of their thinking, they would surely miss their Messiah and find their fathers' condemnation realized in their own experience.
