While his detractors are accusing Paul of vacillating; of saying ‘yes' and ‘no' at the same time, just b/c he skipped a trip to Corinth, he answers with the absolute certainty of God's promises we have in Christ.
He reminded the Corinthians that the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God that he and the others preached while there was not one thing and another, “…but is yes in Him” (v19).
For as many as may be the promises of God, in Him they are yes; God meant for His children to have certainty of their salvation. This is one of the manifold purposes He had in mind by sending His Son in visible flesh and blood.
We could see Him. We could touch Him. We could behold Him in person. He had Thomas touch His resurrected body to prove Himself beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The hope of the love of God being manifest to men foreshadowed in the OT are now confirmed by His very life and death. No question about it.
In Him we have certainty of pardon. In Him we are surely forgiven. In Him we remain steadfast. Ours is the only faith, the only religion that offers the surety of forgiveness.
God understands our real need. And in Him is forever ‘yes' and on this you can hang the whole weight of your soul's salvation without a moments hesitation.
There is nothing else; no one else, upon whom man can seek forgiveness and hope of eternal life than in Jesus who is the Christ. (Acts 4:12)
Our passage gives us 3 solid, foundational reasons why we can be certain of our salvation: 1. The Promises of God (v20); 2. The Person of Christ (v21); and, 3. The Pledge of the Spirit (v22).
