At certain points in scripture the contrast between the godly and ungodly becomes painfully obvious. One such case is the way David treated Saul's grandson Mephibosheth. It was common in those days for a new ruler to exterminate his predecessor's family in order to remove any rivals. It was a mix of self-defence and cruel selfishness. David could have killed Mephibosheth if he wanted. Instead he showed 'the kindness of God'. God is kind to enemies, the insignificant and the failures. He has no fear of rivals and strengthens his people when they show kindness in risky situations. In his kindness he takes the initiative to seek and save the lost. He even makes us part of his family. His kindness puts us at ease - 'Fear not'. David's actions showed all of that. There was another element - the power of promise. David felt bound to keep the promise he had made to Jonathan. That is not an alternative to kindness, but is its result. Similarly God's kindness is for Christ's sake, and he keeps his covenant with his Son by giving people to him, and preserving them to his heavenly kingdom.
