God's thoughts and our thoughts are not the same. We may plan to serve him in some way only to find that he does not permit us to do so. That does not mean we were wrong - only that it is not the time, or circumstances, or that we are not best placed to do it. That is what David found when he planned to build a temple for God. He was well motivated, but not the right person to do it. The story reminds us that godly men can make mistakes - the prophet Nathan supported David until God spoke to him. It also reminds us that his written Word is our only reliable guide. David was concerned about a building;God is concerned about relationships. That should keep us from hypocrisy and legalism. David was concerned about what he might do for God; God was concerned about what he would do for David. He gave David a promise of an everlasting kingdom - an allusion to the coming Christ. It reminds us that our timescale is not the same as God's; we think about the immediate future while he thinks about the long term including eternity. God's care for David was partly in order to preserve the ancestry of the Christ; and e must realise that God's blessing on us is for a purpose bigger than our own enjoyment.
