As Paul did in other letters, he give a series of short, succinct commands that are to be ongoing and as such, should characterize their lives. In closing this letter to the Corinthians, he gave five such commands.
1. They were to be 'on the alert' - watchful for the coming of the Lord and on the look out for false teachers and the schemes of the devil. 2. They were to 'stand firm in the faith' - 'faith' being the Truth revealed to them through the prophets and apostles. This stand must be uncompromising and holding fast to that Truth. 3. They were to 'act like men' in terms referring to conduct. The result being they would have courage, boldness and be fearless in their commitment to the Lord. 4. They would need to 'be strong' - having strength, being mighty and invincible in their stand for the Word of God, by means of the power God would supply to enable them.
And in concluding, with the fifth command, he directed that the previous four are to be carried out in love in their relationships. This love, as he had discussed previously in chapter 13, is an act of obedience in accord with the Word of God.
