Judges tells the story of what happened when 'Israel had no king, and each man did what is right in his own eyes' (21:25). After the death of Joshua, Israel enters into wholesale rebellion against the LORD. Judges describes a downward spiral of national rebellion and deliverance. The LORD will provide twelve judges to deliver Israel from their enemies. But after each deliverance, Israel only deepens their apostasy. Israel's decay is appalling, and the book ends with two gross illustrations of the fruit of national rebellion. As Samson, the last Judge, lost his vision and died, so will the nation that claims to do right by its own eyes. Judges leaves us longing for a king who will set things right, and it is only in the pages of the New Testament that we learn of the King who will sit on his Father's throne and reign forever (Luke 1:31-33). Allegiance to that King is the tonic against society's religious and social-moral decay in any age (Heb. 11:32-34).
