Joshua describes Israel's just and holy war for the Promised Land. Israel is coming into their divine inheritance in the land of Canaan, a land which God promised to them in the days of Abraham. The conquest will be bloody, and there will be many lessons learned along the way. As we consider this book in light of the New Testament, Joshua gives us three powerful lessons on just and holy war today: (1) Our battle is spiritual, not physical (cf. Eph. 6:12); (2) Our land inheritance must come from heaven (cf. Heb. 11:16); and (3) Yahweh holds the exclusive claim to the universe, its laws, and who has the right to dwell therein (cf. Rev. 20:15; 21:7-8). And while the sword that Christians wield is the Word of God, the call to faith, courage, and complete household allegiance remains unchanged. May we say with Joshua, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" (24:15).
