In this section of the letter to the Hebrews the main exhortation is for the believers to "press on to maturity." They are forewarned that before God, there is no option for a believer to turn back to a previous religious system formed on the basis of prior revelation from God to relieve the pressure and persecution. What has been revealed through Jesus Christ is the only means, the only basis for having a right relationship with God and living that out in a life in pursuit of holiness. Their pressing on will require them to leave certain things behind and firmly place their faith in the truth God has now revealed. Such is no less true for believers today. In stressing the seriousness of turning back to a previous time with what has become partial revelation, six characteristics of the foundation already laid are given. The point being made will be that choosing to go back to living under a previous system based on previous revelation such as Judaism is evidence of unbelief in the finished work of Jesus Christ resulting in eternal condemnation.
