The Pastor's Job Description The next series of messages will be on the pastor's job description. The pastor's job description is found within the Scriptures and in the example of Christ who is the Great Shepherd of the souls of His people. We need a biblical expectation of what a pastor should do. In this message, we want to look at the main responsibility of the pastor which is to preach the word. His first and main priority is to preach the unsearchable riches if Christ (3:8)
1. The conduct of the preacher The conduct of the preacher is found in 1 Cor 1:17 where Paul says Christ sent me to preach the gospel. His conduct is to be that of the herald. A herald was to represent the king or government official (Dan 3:4). The aspects of a herald to consider are - the authority of the herald - the solemnity of the herald - the reliability of the herald - the clarity of the herald
2. The content of the pastor's preaching The herald's task is to present Christ. He is to present the riches of his glory and the riches of his generosity. Christ has riches and he is willing to part with some of them for your soul's benefit.
3. The concern that motivates the pastor's preaching The concern is the souls of men. Acts 5:42 shows both the sinner and the saint need to hear the preaching of Christ. The saint needs to understand that Christ is everything you need every day. The sinner needs to understand that Christ is everything he needs for time and eternity.
