Elders are selected in different ways in different churches. However, regardless of the way that elders are elected in the church, the qualifications must be observed. In this sermon, we will look at one of the qualifications for the role of elder. This qualification is character. Elders must be men of character.
1. The root of character Where does the root of an elder come from? - it comes from being saved - it comes from being experienced in the faith - it comes from being planted in Christ.
2. The fruit of their character They must be blameless. This does not mean that they are sinless; but it means that they are not scandalous men. There are certain spheres in which this blamelessness is seen: - in a general sense Elders must be men of spirituality, sobriety, integrity, hospitality, and geniality. - at home Elders must be the husband of one wife and men who rule well. - in the community Elders must be representatives of Christ to the outside world.
