The goal was to move the Ark from Kirjath-Jearim to Jerusalem. It was a worthy goal. It was a goal of which God approved. But a fatal mistake was made.
God had given clear instructions how to carry the ark in Num. 4. It was designed to be carried on poles by certain Levites. It was to be carried with a cover over it so curious onlookers could not simply gaze at it. These were all types and symbols of God's holiness.
David did not obey these clear commands.
We are not to add new regulations that are not in the Word of God.
Nor are we to devise evasions or modifications of God's clear Word
