With today’s message, we pick up in the Gospel of John where we left off prior to our break for some topical messages. The text is John 19:13-22 and the title of the message is “The Verdict.”
One of the important aspects of studying the Bible, and particularly the gospels, is to be careful to observe “what is it that God is teaching?” The gospels writers give us distinct details in their four portraits of Jesus. There is much overlap of course, but they each have different emphases. God gives us four different witnesses, from somewhat different perspectives, to the same events in order to give us a more enriched understanding of the earthly ministry of Jesus.
John provides us with a number of unique accounts, particularly in his account of the Passion. One of them is how he makes the verdict of Pontius Pilate stand out. The details that John includes lift to the surface the fact that Pilate makes a declaration about Jesus: the verdict.
