God's people now have the opportunity to return to Jerusalem following the 70-year exile in Babylon. Initially, there is great hope as the people seem dedicated to serving the LORD. Although a faithful remnant will remain in the land, the majority return to the sinful patterns that have characterized them since their first return from exile back in Egypt. Thankfully, God is faithful to His promises and won't abandon His people. God will still send a Deliverer, even though the people have done nothing to deserve deliverance. The Old Testament closes with less than exciting news about the people, but continued great news about what God is yet to do.
