God's people were carried off to Babylon due to hundreds of years of disobedience to His commands, which included not honoring God's requirement to provide the land a Sabbath rest every 7 years. They would spend 70 years in exile, one year for every year they ignored the Sabbath rest command. What did God want them to do while in exile? Jeremiah's letter to the exiles, which is really God's letter to the exiles, provides the people with a framework as to how they were to live while in Babylon. God's instructions provided a framework for His people in exile, and it also provides believers today a framework for living in a pluralistic culture. All believers must recognize themselves as exiles (Hebrews 11:13) and live in such a way to bring God the glory due Him wherever one might live.
