In chapter 2 the purpose is to call us to unity through humility (vv.2-4). That is followed by the example of Jesus’ humility (vv.5ff) and preceded by the motivation of Jesus’ love (v.1). The “if any’s” are purposeful understatements for the purpose of emotional impact. It is important to experience God’s love (overcome roadblocks). But even with the roadblocks, we have all experienced his tenderness.
