There are a few Bible verses that everyone seems to know, one of them being 'Judge not, lest you be judged.' Another is, 'He who is without sin let him cast the first stone.' Every person seems to know these verses and is quick to point out that you have no business passing judgment on their immoral, destructive behavior. But what does Jesus mean when he says, 'Judge not'? Does He mean that it is never right for us to make a moral judgment? Does He mean we should never formulate an opinion about the conduct of another, but that we should accept everyone and everything without passing judgment? Does he bar us from making any kind of judgment call? This sermon looks at the big picture of passing judgment. It looks first of all at what kind of judgment is allowed or what Jesus does NOT mean by 'Judge not'. Certainly Jesus is not barring someone being charged in a court of law. Nor is He barring us from making moral judgments based on the standard of God's Word and then rebuking or confronting sin. But the kind of judgment that is banned is judging others by a different standard than we judge ourselves, or judging them by our own standard rather than God's. Also barred is judging other's motives, for none of us know for certain why someone does what they do. And certainly Jesus bars his followers from developing and displaying a judgmental attitude of 'I am right; You are wrong!' This is what is meant when Jesus says, 'Judge not, lest you be judged!'
