How can one tell a genuine follower of Jesus Christ from an imposter? Certainly we can apply the 'doctrinal test' for there are certain truths one must believe in order to be a Christian. But it is possible to give all the right answers to the 'doctrinal test' and yet not be a genuine follower of Christ. Jesus says that the way the world will know that we are truly followers of His is by the love that we have for one another! But is loving a brother in Christ the same kind of love that the world has for its own? The world operates according to the rules of reciprocity and self-protection, whereas Jesus has called his followers to the higher standard of love. We are to give of ourselves for the benefit of others without expecting a return. We are to treat others as we would want to be treated. But when we do love others in this way, we can expect certain 'treats', certain benefits. First, Jesus promised us that our reward will be great! God blesses those who generously and lovingly give to help others. And secondly, our resemblance of God's character will be striking. For we will be 'merciful as our Father is merciful.' So, Jesus calls us to the Higher Standard of Love!
