Does God care if we obey him or not? Does he still care if we have idols that we put before him? Of course he does. God does not change. This is the first commandment. The second commandment is like it, but it is not the same commandment. With the overwhelming success of Mel Gibson’s neo-medieval Catholic passion play among Evangelical Christians, it is time to hear what the second commandment teaches again. If all it forbids is the worship of idols, then it does not differ in any respect from the first. Our fascination with the image is leading to a distrust in the word – God’s means of saving sinners. Sin is insidious. We think it is a small thing to break the first two commandments of God, yet the only conclusion we can come to is that all sin is an infinite violation of a perfect holy God’s revealed will. If we want to have a healthy church return to the Protestant world, we must obey God’s commandments again.
