The Holy Spirit changes the way you live. This is the second part of a two-part lesson on Regeneration. God's gift to every believer is His Spirit! It is not the so-called gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gift is the Spirit, Himself. Once we have our spiritual birth (what we call regeneration) the Spirit of God begins to change everything that you took for granted before you had this spiritual birth. So as a believer there is nothing you can do, spiritually, outside of the gift of the Spirit.
The mystery of the filling of the Holy Spirit is He gives us the opportunity to have a completely different life than the one we had before He came into our lives. In fact, the Spirit of God gives us now an option: we can either let sin reign in our lives (through the spirit of the flesh), or we can allow sin to die (through the Spirit of God).
We also explain the tripartite aspect of both man and God and being dead to sin. Just as God is Father, Son, and Spirit, people are body, soul and spirit. God gives us the option of allowing the spirit of the flesh to die so that Spirit of God can rule and reign in our life.
That is why Paul uses the example of baptism where we symbolize that we are allowing our sin nature to die and the Godly nature offered through the Spirit comes to life.
