Discipline, it is a word that, in this day and age, evokes erroneous thoughts of harm, fear, even possible archaic means of physical pain. In a post-modern age, the mention of actual discipline is railed against, scoffed at, and hated. But for many, we can remember a time in which this was not only practiced, but instilled a sense of respect for authority of our parents that spilled over into our adult lives towards our employers, the law, and the country in which we live. But for the believer, the chastening of the LORD is a much deeper and loving form that is not punitive in nature, but is restorative and allows for our faith to be emboldened unto HIS will and being. And because HE chastises those of whom HE has bestowed HIS love and mercy in saving grace, we should pay attention all the more. The question is, are we, and do we rightly understand the necessity for HIS loving discipline in our lives? |
