Pity is probably the most universal response that will be felt this Easter season. Truly, if there is any time of the year that we do NOT respond to the cross of Christ appropriately, it is probably now.
We want to be moved. We want to look at the cross and feel pity and sadness. We want to engage in self-deprecation. We do all this in the name of Christ! Yet when Christ entered into His public ministry, the first words out of His mouth were not “Pity me!" BUT, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. "
When the rich young ruler asked, "What must I do to be saved?" Christ did not say, "Pity me!" Rather Christ said, “sell your possessions and give [them] to the poor.” In other words, give up your life for My sake.
Christ is not after our pity, but much, much more!
